8. 0. 0. 2For many cruisers, a stop at this beautiful private island means a day to kick-back at the beach.

For me, Half Moon Cay means a cruise excursion to go horseback riding in the ocean.Half Moon Cay is Holland America’s private island in the Bahamas. It’s located halfway between Cat Island and Eleuthra, about 100 miles southeast of Nassau. While “owns” Half Moon Cay, occasionally other Carnival Corporation ships stop there, too.

Half Moon Cay horseback riding in the ocean is my favorite cruise excursion. That’s me in the pink cap.My recent cruise aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam gave me the chance to do it all over again.

It had been a few years since I was last at Half Moon Cay and I wondered if the island had changed.Despite hurricanes and storms, nothing much had changed. It looked the same. From the Half Moon Cay dock to the island entrance is a short walk. How to get to Half Moon CayIt’s a 10-minute ferry boat ride from your ship to the island dock. After you exit the ferry, walk ahead to the island entrance. Once you’re through the archway, on your left you’ll see a yellow building marked, “Information”. Go there to check in for your shore excursion.

You’ll also have to sign a waiver. Half Moon Cay Information Center is where you check in for your shore excursion.I left the ship at 10:45 AM for my 11:30am tour. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for the tender to fill up, though once you’re underway, it’s quick.

I didn’t want to take a chance on being late. What to expect during your horseback riding tourEveryone gathers nearby to wait for the tram to get to the stable. It’s a fun 5-minute tram ride and you’ll get to see a little of the island, too. I didn’t know it but it’s a very popular place for bird-watching.At Pegasus Ranch, the “wranglers” greet and escort everyone to a shaded area.

Once everyone is seated, the ranch manager Richie will come over, tell a few jokes, talk about what you’ll do and begin the safety briefing. Richie, the Pegasus Ranch stable manager, gives us our safety briefing.After that, Richie points out the lockers and how they work. There were plenty of available lockers.

The locker key is on a curly-cord bracelet so it stays on you even in the water. Next, he fits you for your helmet.

The first one I chose was way too big. When Richie came over and saw it didn’t fit, he found a smaller one and did all the adjustments for me.Next, we all lined up under the shade. As the stable hands led out the horses, Richie decided who would ride a particular horse. Then one by one, we walked over and mounted our steed.

Then we’re off andwalking. No running, cantering or galloping allowed. The first half is a slow and easy 30-minute trail ride.As we walk our horses, the dirt path rises about 60-feet above sea level.

Just before the descent, the ocean comes into view. Advertisements As we wind our way through the pine trees towards the water, suddenly there’s a beautiful view of our ship.After a five minute walk along the beach, our trail ride comes to an end. We dismount and are instructed to change into our bathing suits if we wanted to and to meet out front when every is locked up, including our shoes. No shoes, not even water shoes, are allowed.

Taking the horses for a swimWhile we waited for our horses to be prepared for our “swim”, Richie offered us ice-cold sodas or bottled water. A special pad and halter designed for use in the ocean replaced the leather saddle. No pommel to grab! I was fine but there were a couple of first-timers that had never been on a horse. The guy in front of me was one of them.

With no stirrups to use to mount the horse, you walk up these small platforms and simply swing your leg over the aqua pad “saddle”.As soon as we were all ready to head to the ocean, we were off. The running came later! AdvertisementsSlowly we entered the water. NOTE: For some reason, the horses tend to poop when they get in the water. Just a suggestionlook out for floaters.This part of the horseback riding experience goes way too fast.

Within maybe five minutes of our going one direction, the wranglers tell us to turn around and head back. The horses know they’re heading back and want to get to the stable asap. Not that they can gallop, but it’s definitely a faster pace. For me, I couldn’t wait to let Apache test his speed.

As soon as I got the OK to go, we went!It’s an exhilarating and exciting experience, for sure. I love the freedom of just being on a horse and letting him “go”. I’ve overheard newbies say that it was a highlight of their cruise.As you and your horse slowly transition from sea to sand, wait until someone comes by to help you to dismount. Then it’s back to retrieve your belongings from the locker and head to the tram. Keep in mind this entire shore excursion will take just under two hours. If you take the late morning tour, you won’t have much time for the beach barbecue.

Wear jeans or long pants for the trail ride. I suggest dark pants. The dye from the leather rubbed off on my khakis.

You must wear closed-toe shoes. Despite knowing better, a guy in my group wore sandals. He wasn’t allowed to ride. Bring sunscreen. Put your swimsuit on underneath your riding clothes. If you plan to go to the beach afterwards, bring a towel. If you have a, you can keep it on in the water.

No handbags, backpacks etc. You can give your iPhone to one of the shoreside wranglers or an observer to take your photo. Be polite when asking. You don’t need to bring water. Everyone gets a bottle or a soda. Tips are welcome.

Simply hand it to Richie after your ride. If you’ve never ridden a horse, tell Richie. He’ll make sure you get the best horse for a beginner.That’s it! I actually own the waterproof fanny pack and it works! Hi Bert,Yikes! That’s pretty scary. Yes, there is some risk involved and that’s why we signed those waivers. I can see why a newbie rider would feel a little intimidated on the ride in the water.

Sometimes the horses do clump together and I don’t like that feeling of being squished. I can’t imagine how you must have felt as the water saddle slipped and you fell in. The staff was great and entertaining. Some of our group were feeling that they hadn’t been warned that this ride was as intense as it was in the water.On our ride, the ride one way was uneventful but I was wondering how to stay on. I wouldn’t say they were swimming because you could feel them hitting the bottom as we moved. The horses were quite close together.On the return, my saddle started to slip to one side and for lack of anything better to do, I hung on, eventually falling into the water as the saddle continued to slip. The horse kicked me as it went by.Its taken about 6 weeks before the swelling has receded, but there is a big lump on my quad where the impact was. Luckily it was on my leg instead of my head or ribs which would have been an expensive trip home.I’m 175 and I was told I was a natural on the land part of the ride but I do think people need to understand there is some risk to this event.

HIND LIMB INTERFERENCEStephen E. O’Grady DVM, MRCVSHind limb interference is a gait abnormalitythat occurs when the medial (inside) portion of a hind footstrikes the opposite hind limb anywhere from the coronet tojust below the hock. The inside of the pastern or fetlock isthe area most often struck by the offending foot. Causes forhind limb interference can be divided into temporary orpermanent. Temporary causes would include age and stage oftraining, degree of fitness, fatigue and inappropriatetrimming and/or shoeing.

Permanent causes of hind limbinterference are linked to faulty conformation. Horses withbase narrow conformation that turn out are usually candidatesfor this type of abnormal gait. This type of conformation willcause the arc of flight of the hind foot to deviate inwardstoward the opposite limb instead of moving straight ahead.Winging inward may cause the foot to travel close enough tothe opposite limb to interfere.

Interference generally occursat the trot. Horses with cow-hocked conformation will alsomove in such a way that the flight of the foot moves inwardtoward the opposing limb but because of the distance betweenthe hind limbs, these horses seldom interfere. The base narrowhorse will stand with its hind feet together. If you standbehind the horse you can note the severity of the inwardflight pattern of the limb.

Often when the hind foot contactsthe ground, the hock will move outwards which denotesinstability of the hind limbs with a further tendency tointerference. Most base narrow horses, and for that matter,horses with cow-hocked conformation will have a narrowrolled-under heel on the outside of both hind feet. As thehind limbs bear weight, the foot rolls off on the outside heelwhich allows the inside of the foot to move closer to theopposite limb often compounding the problem.Temporary causes of interference are often treated withpatience. As the horse matures, advances in its traininglevel, builds up the musculature in the hind limbs and attainsa higher degree of fitness, the intermittent signs ofinterference will disappear. Often the horse is shod behindwith shoes that are too small. This reduces overall groundsurface and hind limb support causing instability which inturn can lead to the horse occasionally striking the oppositelimb.

This can be corrected simply by using a shoe that is theappropriate size. Protective boots can be placed on thefetlocks until any cause of temporary interference isresolved.Interference caused by abnormal conformation is correctedthrough proper farriery. Your farrier should observe the horseat a walk and trot to determine the flight pattern of the limband the severity of the interference. If you can’t see theinterference, carpenter’s chalk can be placed on the inside ofthe hoof walls to determine where the interference isoccurring and if one or both feet are involved. When trimmingthe base narrow horse, the medial (inside) hoof wall should belowered. This will normally provide more clearance when thehorse moves. A square toe shoe (angled toward the outside ofthe toe) is useful as it helps to straighten the path offlight.

The shoe should be long enough to extend behind theheels of the foot. A trailer on the outside with the shoe fitfull is beneficial if the outside heel is narrow and rolledunder.

This is generally all that is needed to remedy theinterference.If the horse has a cow-hocked conformation, whether or not itinterferes, it should be trimmed in such a manner that thelateral (outside) hoof wall is trimmed lower. This will changethe position of the foot, allowing the toes to be more in linewith a straight flight path. Again a square toe shoe will helpthe foot breakover straighter and a lateral trailer should beused. The trailer will contact the ground first and rotate theposition of the foot straighter when landing.In summary, to rectify hind limb interference, your farrier isattempting to change the flight pattern of the limb, correctany instability present and provide adequate support.Any discussion of gait abnormalities of the hind limbs wouldnot be complete without discussing forging.

Forging is notedat a trot (sometimes at a walk) and happens when the toe ofthe hind foot strikes the heel or bottom of the front foot onthe same side just as the front foot is starting to leave theground. When the toe of the hind shoe strikes the heel of thefront shoe, a constant metallic sound is heard as the horsetrots.

What happens is the front foot is too slow in leavingthe ground to avoid the forward advancing hind foot.Overreaching is a more severe form of forging where theadvancing hind limb approaches the fore limb even faster andthe toe of the hind foot lands on the heel bulb of the frontfoot on the same side before the foot leaves the ground. Thiswill result in the shoe being pulled and the heel bulb beinglacerated (known as a heel grab).Forging can again be caused by age, fatigue, improper riding,degree of fitness and faulty conformation.

Faults inconformation that lead to forging are seen in a young horsethat is experiencing a surge in growth, short backed horseswith long legs, front or hind feet that are set too far underthe body, long hind limbs, and “sickle” hock conformation.Another area that is often overlooked is forelimb lameness.Any horse with forelimb discomfort that causes a short“stilted” gait or lack of extension can develop forging. If anabnormal gait is noted in the forelimb accompanied by forging,local anesthesia can be used to block the front feet, and ifthe gait improves and the forging disappears, a thoroughlameness examination should be initiated.The treatment of forging can be thought of as a function oftiming.

The intent of treatment is to speed up the breakoverof the forefeet and slow down the advancing hind feet. Again,the horse is observed by the farrier at a walk and trot todetermine the extent of the gait abnormality. To speed upbreakover in the front limbs, any excessive toe length istrimmed accordingly. Then a square, rolled or rocker toe shoeis used to enhance breakover. Some feel a lighter shoe such asaluminum is beneficial in the front feet.

It’s imperative thatthe appropriate size shoe is used to provide the proper groundsurface and support. Often a shoe that is too small ismistakenly used with the thought that the horse will not pullthe shoe but in fact it compounds the problem The hind feetare trimmed in a manner that the heels are moved back to thewidest part of the frog to create as much ground surface aspossible. A square toe shoe is used and the toe of the shoe isset back ¼ to 3/8 inch from the outline of the hoof wall atthe toe. The heels of the hind shoes are fitted well beyondthe buttress of the foot.

This type of the shoe coupled withthe trimming will tend to keep the foot on the ground longer,i.e., decrease breakover of the hind limb.Hind limb abnormalities often require trial and error tocorrect. If a horse continues to forge despite various shoeingmodifications, then it may be necessary to determine whetherthe horse is suitable for the athletic endeavor being pursued.The one necessary requirement to eliminate forging, is a goodworking relationship with a knowledgeable, competent farrier.Dr. Steve O’Grady is a veterinarian and farrier who runsNorthern Virginia Equine in The Plains, VA.
